This week a seasonal version of the iconic American snack cake - Hostess Twinkies - joined dozens of other foods as a victim of a secondary recall because of Salmonella contamination at a powdered milk plant.
Hostess Brands LLC of Kansas City, MO, initiated a nationwide recall of its “Holiday White Peppermint Twinkies” late Monday because of a recall by Blommer Chocolate Co. of the confectionary coating used on the Twinkies, according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration's website.

Hostess Brands, L.L.C. on Jan. 9 issued a voluntary recall for its Holiday White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies, which are sold in multipack boxes. The action was taken “out of an abundance of caution” following a recall by Blommer Chocolate Co. of the confectionery coating used on the Twinkies product.

If you treated yourself to a box of White Peppermint Twinkies over the holidays, it's time to return them ASAP. Hostess is voluntarily recalling the treats after learning that Blommer Chocolate Company has recalled milk powder ingredients included in the coating due to a concern about a possible salmonella risk.
The recall only applies to the "White Peppermint Hostess Twinkies" and were sold in packs of nine. Although no reports of illness have been reported and none of the Twinkies have tested positive for salmonella, it's always better to be on the safe side.
